Humor is the ability to produce a smile or laughter along with general goodwill. Often used as a synonym for comedy, humor can be derived from situations that are ridiculous or incongruous. Humor is found in the innocence of a child’s botched knock-knock joke, the wry observations of Jerry Seinfeld, or the slapstick sensibilities of the Farrelly Brothers’ films.
Comedy has been always been a staple of television viewers; long-running series such as I Love Lucy, The Cosby Show, Cheers, The Simpsons and of course, Saturday Night Live are testament to the popularity of humor. Humor in film is also popular, although an Academy Award win for a comedy genre Best Picture is rare.
Humor is just as pervasive in the world of literature; well known humor writers such as Erma Bombeck, Dave Barry, and David Sedaris have all reached best-seller status.
